In 2011, Chris started dialysis and needed a kidney transplant.
One of Chris’ old high school football teammates, Tom, heard about his condition and wanted to help. Tom told Chris he would be willing to donate a kidney to Chris whenever he was ready. Tom and Chris became part of a paired kidney exchange with a father and son. Tom (White) gave his kidney to the father (Hispanic/Latinx), while the son (Hispanic/Latinx) gave his kidney to Chris (African American/Black), thus saving two lives — and demonstrating the power of love and generosity across multicultural communities.
